Weekend Ramblings

Can’t believe it’s Sunday already- the weekend sure is going by fast!

Since the weather has been so great here lately, I was able to walk my dog to the dog park yesterday instead of taking the car as I would usually do.  It took about 45 minutes to walk there, and another 45 minutes to walk back.  It was so nice walking through the quaint little neighbourhoods on the first day of spring.  When driving or cycling, you really have a different perspective on what you see compared to walking.  The walk really made me realize that I want to stay here in Vancouver even though it’s so unaffordable.

Yesterday, Mr. youngandthrifty and I had our Valentine’s dinner in lieu (yes, coming a month late!) because we were really busy with trying to partake in all the Vancouver 2010 Olympic festivities.  We went to a fancy steakhouse (I know, I know, not very thrifty) and the dinner total came up to $150 (including tip).  I think that is probably the most expensive dinner that mr. youngandthrifty and I have ever had.  We probably go out for a nice dinner (meaning more than $60 for the total bill) about three times a year, so it was quite the treat.  Usually we don’t order any drinks but we splurged last night AND even ordered an appetizer!  Yes, we are usually quite thrifty!

Just a little contest I wanted to share with y’all.

Here are some excerpts from a select few Yakezie blogs this week:

Enjoy these great threads and the rest of your weekend folks!

Just wanted to get your input- how often do you go out for fancy dinners?  Would you spend $75 per person on food? What is your $ limit on how much you would spend on food?

Might have to change your name to young and not so thrifty. ;-) $75 is a hefty sum for one person! I think $20-30 is the most I would spend per person.

@Bible Debt LOL I know! “young and semi-thrifty” Oh well, it was a delicious steak dinner anyway! Yeah, $20-30 would be my max too, except on rare occasions =)

  2. I’m planning to go to Great Barrier Reef to complete the open water certificate. I’ve always wanted to go there, so killing two birds with one stone.

We fare pretty well compared to the other OECD nations. The official interest rate is now sitting on 4% and will climb further anytime soon. It’s good for savers, but as a mortgage owner, I don’t like it that much.

@Bytta I went to the Great Barrier Reef last summer (well, your winter) and it was amazing! So beautiful… Australia is just beautiful- your flora and fauna kicks north america’s flora and fauna butt any day! =) I wonder if the 4% is keeping the housing costs down? (Because the low interest rate here is driving prices up- bidding wars are happening again!) Though that can’t be the case since Melbourne and Sydney are way up there in the unaffordability survey as well. Thanks for visiting- and good luck on completing your diving certificate!

It’s nice to splurge every now and then, especially on certain occasions. They better have made your steaks right!

I went to the Keg steakhouse a couple of years ago and ordered a side order of mushrooms and onions with my steak. Little did I know that it cost $14 for that side order when the bill came!

@The Rat It was a really good steak, thanks (lol you’re right, better be for the price). It’s the sides that get you, side of mushrooms and onions for $14 (the price of an entree at most places) is pretty intense. I think at the steakhouse I went to, a side of mashed potatoes was $8 or something =)

That charge substantially lowered your payback odds :) .

There’s a reason I call them ‘scratch and lose’.
