One of my friends (who lives overseas teaching English) told me she wanted to open up a Questrade account but she found it too difficult (I agree, it was a pain in the butt with the multitude of passwords they send to you, the different websites (my Questrade vs Questrader.com). Even I (who has a TFSA, RRSP, non-registered account with Questrade) found it difficult to navigate and find the information I needed. So Questrade listened to people’s complaints and are updgrading to Questrade 2.0.

Here are some of the changes (so if you’ve been sitting on the fence about whether or not to open up an account, now’s the time to do it, because it’s 10x easier to):

New account numbers- Instead of the BS43921 number they gave you (which was really confusing and likely contributed to the SAGA of me depositing to the wrong account- thought the “5″ was an “s” and it took 6 months for me to get my money back), you get a nice and clean 8 digit NUMERICAL number. None of the alpha-numeric stuff that was so confusing. Now I have to update my account numbers for internet banking when I deposit money into my accounts- don’t forget to do that, guys!

Increased security- When I called today to correct the information from the conversion of the Income Trust to corporation (they often input the incorrect cost per share price during changes like this- which irks me to high heaven, but it’s a simple fix…), they actually asked me for my information to verify that I am the correct person. Which is always nice

Easier to apply for an account- It’s easier to apply for an account now. So if you already have a non-registered account, it will be easier for you to apply for a additional TFSA account. You also won’t get your passwords emailed to you (which is also good for security purposes) with the new changes.

My Questrade is easier to navigate- It was really annoying trying to find my account balance information (for my TFSA, RRSP, non-registered account) all in one place. Now it’s much easier.. seriously a BAZILLION times better. It’s like night and day… seriously.

Keeping you informed of the changes- They have a little mini-blog that keeps you updated on the changes. It’s called Go Questrade. Go check it out if you’re confused at all about any of the changes.

Onto some PF Blog Love.

PF Blog Love

Sunil from Easy Extra Money Online has a really poignant vignette about a Mexican fisherman and an American MBA Harvard graduate. It’s about life balance (and not killing your soul trying to bust your ass to make money) and I really liked it.

Do Not Wait has a great post detailing 9 Tactics for the Young Investor. One of them is my favourite principle of all time- Pay yourself first.

Retire by 40 writes about How to Retire By 40- the quintessential guide (I added the quintessential guide part- I think it has a good ring to it)

Squirrelers has a thought provoking post getting us to stop and think about how many HOURS of work it really costs us for that car we are buying. Thinking about the big picture is helpful to prevent lifestyle inflation.

Financial Samurai has a question to ask ourselves on Valentine’s Day. Growing old alone can be lonesome, but often those who are single have extensive support networks that include friends and other family… so hopefully it isn’t that bad. If I ever become single, I’ll probably end up becoming a dog lady with 6 dogs in my house.

Invest it Wisely has a guest post on The “Tiger Mom” Approach by Amy Chua. Financial Samurai also had a post in the past about this book. Sounds like this book and her parenting strategies are stirring up a lot of controversy/ interest.

HowtoSaveMoney.ca has a detailed post on The Best Shopping Comparison sites in Canada (good resource- all these sites I didn’t know about!)

A special “shout out” to Krystal who blogs at Give Me Back my Five Bucks. In her Moneyville (through the Toronto Star) article, she mentions little ol’ me as one of her 8 favourite personal finance blogs! What an honour- thank you Krystal!

Fabulously Broke has a REALLY cool post showing the average faces of different nationalities- go take a look and see if you can see yourself (sorry guys, female pictures only, but these females are all really pretty so it’s worth a look).

Extra Interest, say what?

Canadian Tire bank has recently unveiled a limited-time bonus interest rate incentive on two of its personal banking services (you get an extra 1%).

April (a Y&T.ca reader) wanted me to let you guys know about this new promotion going on a Canadian Tire bank:

The Canadian Tire High Interest Savings account and the Canadian Tire Tax Free High Interest Savings account are perfect for people who are looking for the flexibility of earning interest on their savings, with no monthly fees, no lock-in period and 24/7 online banking. For the first 90 days from when money is deposited into a new account, customers will earn a special interest rate of 2.50% (if the account is a Canadian Tire High Interest Savings Account) or 3.50% (if the account is a Canadian Tire Tax Free High Interest Savings Account).

After the 90 day period, the extra 1% they gave you won’t be applicable anymore (so it will go back to 2.5% for a HISA TFSA and 1.5% interest earned for a regular HISA).

Just remember not to over-contribute to the TFSA (e.g. don’t withdraw and think you can put it back in immediately) like the 70,000 other Canadians that accidentally did this year.

Questrade USD Transfers:

A reader and subscriber (thanks for writing to me!) wrote to me about her experience with the USD Transfer with Questrade. I also had the same experience, but the amount I transferred was quite small, though I was still peeved about it. Looks like we shared the same issue. She had started up a registered account (just like I did) and had specified the currency preference to Canadian dollars (because who wouldn’t, it IS an RRSP/TFSA after all). She then proceeded to transfer the USD as a pre-authorized deposit. Then, checking to see how the deposit went, it turns out that the USD was automatically converted back to CAD dollars at the end of the day.

The same thing happened to me. I was befuddled. It didn’t make sense that the reason someone WOULD transfer USD to a trading account is to avoid the currency conversion, but they screwed that up by transferring your money back into CAD, hence you the investor, will have to pay the currency conversion twice. Which sucks big time- can you say OUCH? The thing is, they don’t have a pop up box that warns you or cues you to tell you your money will be transferred back to Canadian dollars at the end of the day.

The lesson learned here is that you need to set your currency preference to NEUTRAL when you first register for your account (and if you don’t know how to do this, ask! They are pretty accessible by their online chat option or by phone) to avoid the currency hits!

It is pretty awesome that Questrade allows you to trade with USD (I believe the only registered account in Canada that lets you hold foreign currency) but you just need to make sure it’s not converted back to Canadian money, which beats the point of wanting a USD registered account in the first place.

Happy Trading and Saving, guys!

Readers, any other mishaps like this happen to you?

I actually searched my own blog on how to transfer USD and couldn’t find anything (I’m not narcissistic I swear! I just remembered that I posted about how long a USD transfer took back in January). I finally figured it out today (after wasting about a total of 45 minutes of my life that I will never see again). I thought I would actually post it and help you save 45 minutes of your precious time… and if I have a memory lapse again, I can search my blog with “great success”, as Borat would say.

The reason why you might do a USD transfer is because you won’t have to exchange your Canadian dollars into US dollars when the exchange rate isn’t favourable. I don’t like losing money to currency hits AND conversion charges. It’s a win-win situation.

So here is the low-down on how to transfer your USD to Questrade from your USD account, step by step:

Log into My Questrade

Click on “My Funds”

Click on “Fund Your Account”

As you can see, only Online Banking and Pre-authorized Deposits are free of charge; Online Banking doesn’t do US dollar transfers, so the only free option is a Pre-authorized Deposit

Before you get freaked out by the word “pre-authroized deposit” like I initially did, you can do a pre-authorized deposit only once- it doesn’t have to be recurring (yes, you can be non-commital like me)

Follow the instructions- they’ll ask for your US dollar bank account number and will verify your bank account with e-signatures

Once you’ve set up that account link, you can transfer USD any time with ease (no need to fill out a form/ paper work each time)

I set up the Pre-authorized deposit back in January (and forgot about it, of course), and it still worked for me today (it will work for you forever as long as you don’t change your US dollar account number)

After setting this up, this time, it only took one day to transfer to Questrade from my USD account. Awesome. =)

Happy trading US equities! As Miley Cyrus would say, party in the USA!

Hope everyone’s having a great weekend so far. It’s beautifully sunny here in Vancouver and I can’t wait to get outside to enjoy some of that rare sunshine.

I finally got my act together and signed up for a self-directed RRSP Questrade account. I’m transferring over the BMO investorline RRSP account to Questrade. I found that I was hesitant to rebalance my portfolio in the BMO Investorline account because of the $29 trading commissions. Also, I was getting sick of paying the $100 yearly administration fee (that the guy neglected to tell me about when I signed up a few years back) that they charge if your portfolio is less than $25,000. I’m not even allowed to contribute more than $25,000 in RRSPs because of the pension adjustment I get. I should have done this a long time ago, oh well- hindsight is always 20-20, right?

LOL I might as well change my middle name to Questrade. I now have a non-registered margin account, a TFSA account, and an RRSP account with them. You really can’t beat the $4.95 trades.

And the winner is…

youngandthrifty.ca had a giveaway of the book “Enjoy Your Money; How do Make It, Save It, Invest It, and Give It” by Steve J. Miller. I used random.org and drew the winner of the book giveaway.

And the winner is….Kevin! From Financiallypoor.com. Congrats, Kevin!

A few months back, I was perusing on Questrade’s site and saw a free workshop for “Learn to Trade” with Online Trading Academy. I thought it would be helpful to pick up some tips as there was a free lunch. I have trouble passing up free lunch and education! Online Trading Academy is an affiliate of Questrade. One of the main reasons I went was that they said that the Professional Trader course is free and paid for by Questrade through a tuition rebate. More on that later.

The Online Trading Academy has been educating traders since 1997. They have multiple locations throughout the world.

So I signed up for their Power Trading workshop (a half day session). In the workshop, we got to meet with a professional trader and an instructor of their Professional Trader 3-7 day course. It was a good half day session. The trader tells us that he does his thing on the market for 30 minutes before he goes to work, and then he’s done for the rest of his day (and goes to his regular job- that’s the great thing about living on the west coast–the time difference!). I found that for myself, I’m more of a swing trader. I hold stocks and trade them in a matter of days to weeks. The Online Trading Academy was more advocating for a daily trade- they encourage not to hold overnight because you never know what might happen. They exert a lot of control with their trades. They teach you technical analysis and how to trade in any type of market (up, down, sideways).

The selling points of Online Trading Academy are:

they give you THEIR money to trade with to learn (because you really can’t learn to trade in the market unless you got real money- it’s all about the psychology) though when I asked how much capital they gave the class to start off, I don’t think it was very much.

you can have unlimited class retakes (again, good for people who can take time off work easily) and

you can go to any Trading Academy centre around the world (they have one in Dubai, lol!) and retake it

The tuition rebate was actually that Questrade will rebate you 10% of your commissions (read: $0.50 to $1.00 of $4.95 to $9.95) until your tuition is paid off. The tuition is roughly $5000 for one and $3750 for a couple for the 7 day workshop, so after about 3000-7000 trades (if you sign up for the couple option), your tuition will be paid off through your commissions. That probably seems like a lot of trades (well to me it is), but if someone does lets say 4 trades daily M-F, that’s about 80 trades a month, so in about three years +, your tuition will be fully paid off. Hmm. Still seems like a lot to me though.

Here are some unbiased reviews on Online Trading Academy, some people also mention the ‘hard sell’ tactic in the one day seminar.

Right now, in Canada, the Online Trading Academy is only available in Toronto and Vancouver. If you live near these cities, I recommend signing up for their half day workshop if you have the time. They were quite pushy in terms of trying to sell you their product after lunch (well, free lunch comes at a price, doesn’t it?). But at least Questrade offers a rebate program, though it’ll take a while before you become fully compensated.

Another reason why I didn’t sign up was that in order to trade, you need to sign up for a direct access trading platform (to bypass the broker and execute a trade instantly in fractions of a second versus seconds to minutes). That can cost about $75 a month. Questrade does offer a simplified version of the direct access platform for free if you do 20 trades a month (it’s usually $20 a month).

I think if I didn’t have to work a full time job (or was able to easily get 1 week off) I would do it. But because I do have to work and would rather go on vacation with that money and time, I will pass.

Now onto my humble giveaway!!

I have one of their Online Trading Academy 2 CD sets that I got from the seminar to give away (for all y’all that aren’t located near one of their schools):

This post wasn’t sponsored by them or anything, but I just had an extra CD set so wanted to pass on the good karma =) Hope they’re okay with that!

One CD is the Ten Laws of Trading, and the other is the 7 Pillars of Trading both with Mike McMahon (he’s a course instructor and developer for the Online Trading Academy). I found it pretty informative, both are about 30 minutes long.

To win, please subscribe via email or RSS and follow me on twitter- please also leave a comment so I know that you did so (and I can enter you into my spreadsheet). If you already are subscribed and following, just leave a comment.

I’ll pick the winner with random.org. Good luck!

Contest deadline is: Sunday April 11, 2010 at 9pm PST

I wanted to update you on how the Tax Free Trading Account that I got with Questrade is doing. My Tax Free Trading Account portfolio was funded with $5000 at the end of January and to date, I have about $46 in distributions, and total equity including distribution is $5607.

That’s a 12% increase in about 1.5 months time. Not too shabby, if I do say so myself. Because I was able to keep the trading commissions low ($4.95 with Questrade) I was able to preserve more of my hard earned cashola. I think this 12% definitely beats the 1-3% that a conventional Tax Free Savings Account offers.

It’s nice that the markets are cooperating these days!

Also in blog news, just wanted to share that Tom at Canadian Finance Blog kindly allowed me to guest post on his blog! Thanks to the Yakezie group for making this happen! This is my first guest post ever, so it is pretty exciting. Please go over and check it out (especially if you’re a family with children under 18 and you think Colin Hansen, our British Columbia finance minister is damn sexy).

In addition to Questrade, the other online brokerage account that I have is with BMO Investorline. I have both an RRSP account and a non-registered account. BMO Investorline has rave reviews (top ranked bank-owned online broker by Globe and Mail, #1 in customer email responsiveness, and an Ipsos Reid poll stating that they are the best in customer service). Here’s what I think of BMO Investorline:

PROS:

Really, really easy to use. Easy to access and easy to read format.

I love the charts and graphs. They also provide S&P top picks, Globeinvestor rankings, detailed quotes, company profiles etc. etc.

BMO Investorline’s customer service is fantastic. They’re always very polite on the phone, and they get back to you really quickly if you have a message for them by email. They seem very personable.

You can collect Air Miles when you first sign up for an account.

Easy peasy to transfer money between BMO investorline and your regular BMO account.

Easy to transfer USD currency too (which is much harder for Questrade)

If you transfer your account, they’ll pay up to $200 in transfer out fees

CONS:

The $9.95 trade is only good if you have over $100,000 in assets (ugh…I don’t even HAVE $100,000 to my name).

Their GIC and mutual funds need at least $10,000- $15,000 to purchase

It’s $29 a trade. That’s a big drawback for me.

They charge you (like most RRSP accounts) $105 for maintaining your RRSP account per year

My take?

I guess BMO Investorline is targeted towards people who have HUGE portfolios. I still like BMO Investorline. Too bad the commission is so high. I would classify myself as more of a swing trader, so I think that the commissions I would incur would eat my portfolio alive. I found that with the RRSP account (it holds ETF’s), I was hesitant to “diversify” my portfolio too much, and use dollar cost averaging because of the high commissions. I think that mutual fund (or TD E-funds) would be better suited for that (dollar cost averaging). Though for that, you just have to make sure the MER’s don’t outweigh the cost of the commissions. Cause then that would be defeating the point.

When I initially signed for the BMO Investorline account, it was when I was escaping Investor’s Group. BMO told me that I should amalgamate my bank accounts with a family member so that the total assets could be $100,000 and then we’d be able to trade for $9.95 a share.

Although that would be nice, the tax implications of amalgamating the assets would be kind of sketchy. So I declined. Maybe one day I’ll be in the “big leagues” (>$100,000 portfolio) and be able to use their $9.95 commissions.

In the meantime, Questrade for me it is.

Do you use BMO Investorline? What do you think of it? What about the other (Big) Bank Online Brokerages?

For 2010, I decided to use the TFSA to shield the taxes from income trust distributions. I opened up a Questrade Tax Free Savings account (or Tax Free Trading Account, as they like to call it).

Since Investing In Canada had a great summary of what he ended up buying for his 2009 TFSA, I thought I would share what I ended up picking too.

I bought (all trading on the TSX):

100 shares of EIF (Exchange Industrial Income Fund). EIF is an aviation (provides airline services to people in the communities of Manitoba and Nunavut) and manufacturing (produces specialized tanks, pressure equipment, and precision metal parts in Western Canada and the US) fund pays $0.13 cents monthly so far, and it has a healthy balance sheet. For a fund that’s been around since August 2009 only, I’d say this is pretty good. It has already incorporated itself, so it’s free from all the Income Trust taxation drama. It pays about 11.6% dividends.

100 shares of LIQ.UN (Liquor Stores Income Fund) owns or has significant investment in liquor stores in British Columbia and Alberta including five small pubs in British Columbia. They pay a $0.14 monthly distribution (10.7% per year) People like to get their drink on. Even in times of recession

100 shares of CFX.UN (Canfor Pulp Income Fund) This industry took a real good beating, but things are looking up. They recently increased their dividend from $0.01 per share to $0.05, then $0.08 per share.

25 shares of REF.UN (Canadian REIT) Some people say to put only 5% of your portfolio in REITs because they can be risky. I was going to choose the RIOCAN REIT, but rumours are that RIOCAN REIT may cut back on its distributions soon. RIOCAN is primarily based on commerical/ shopping area real estate, and the Canadian REIT is more diversified and has a little bit of real estate involvement in everything.

99 shares of YLO.UN (Yellow Pages Income Fund) (I only bought 99 shares because I was getting close to the $5000 mark lol) They are very innovative- branching from the traditional phone books, to online, and recently they announced that they’re partnering with Toshiba to have the Yellow Pages search icon embedded in the Toshiba desktop for easy searching. The distribution is about hefty 15% right now.

Because each trade only cost $4.95 I was able to buy five different things to put into my TFSA basket. Yes, Questrade is awesome that way. Otherwise, I could have spent $145 alone in commission costs with another online brokerage.

I can’t wait to see the monthly distributions flow in. Untaxed. If the TFSA were a thing, I’d kiss it right now.

This is what I ended up buying folks, don’t be a lemming and follow me off the cliff (if there is one, hopefully there’s not), do your own research.

There’s been so many nebulous answers out there, and the Questrade site itself makes it sound like it’ll happen in an instant.. so I sought to test it out myself.

I saw the magic number that I deposited from my BMO USD account in my Questrade account yesterday (January 19). I sent my “e-signature” off January 11 (so give two or three days for our lovely Canadian Postal system to get it across the country); It took about 7 days for the transfer to go through (9 including all the mailing back and forth)

That’s pretty fast. Some people say it can take up to 20 business days.

I know I know, still not that fast. With BMO Investorline, you can just drop off some cashola at any BMO branch and have it transferred into your BMO Investorline account in a snap.

Okay enough about Questrade- I’ll talk about what I bought in my TFSA so far tomorrow.

Generally, I am very happy with Questrade and their $4.95 max $9.95 trades. It’s very easy on the wallet.

Usually, their customer service has been excellent and I’ve been very happy with it.

Recently however, this one morning I was trying to contact them, this happened:

Background: The reason why I called Questrade was because I was selling a stock (in my Bloomberg app, I included both my BMO investorline purchase of the stock combined with my Questrade purchase of the stock, so I wasn’t clear what I bought the stock at for Questrade- it threw me off). On the Questrade webtrader, it said I have a capital gain of $50 and that I bought it in October 2009 for $36.73 therefore netting a capital gain of $50. I wanted to get rid of the stock anyways and use that capital to buy other stuff…

BUT… AFTER I sold it, I checked my old records (the little slips they send you after your trades) and I had actually bought it in February 2008 for like $54.20; and now it was $38.73. So I actually had a capital loss of $450. Dissatisfied with the misleading data on webtrader, I decided to call and complain (though I should have known better, because one night the webtrader data showed I had $23,000 in capital gains when it was only $230 for another stock).

Calling the Questrade client support/ trade desk number while having breakfast (about 10AM EST)(I put it on speaker phone) I hear:

20 minutes of elevator music with random punctuation of music about every 5 minutes saying “Thank you for calling Questrade, we value your call, your call has been placed in priority sequence” or some crap like that.

Then suddenly, I hear that my call is being transferred (the elevator music stops, I hear a dial tone so I get excited)

Doo…dooo….dooo…dooo…doo…I wait… doo..doo..doo..doo…

This dial tone sound goes on for another 10 minutes; no one is picking up the %$*#)*% phone (I am getting pissed at this point)

Being the impatient Generation Y that I am; I hang up and think “Aha! I’ll try to contact them through LIVE HELP… it worked last time quickly”

So I go on my computer to get linked up right away

And then I wait for another 20 minutes, every five minutes I get “The next Live Help representative is going to help you” or something like that.

Then I FINALLY get someone (Murphy’s Law, by the time I get to someone, I’m having to leave for work or else risk being late)

So the Customer Service Rep asks for my account details, and asks me what the problem is

I start telling my story, writing feverishly, and ask if the trade can be cancelled or somehow reversed (since it takes three business days for a trade to complete) because webtrader gave me misleading information leading me to sell instead of hold

Then the Customer Service Rep doesn’t respond to my question (you can see if they’re typing up a response, much like MSN messenger). I wait another 10 minutes. Frustrated and late for work, I tell him to email me the answer instead.

So in the email I get the answer that I was expecting, which was basically a “no, tough luck“; it’s your responsibility to check your transactions, even if Questrade’s webtrader details is screwed up (and it shows that you’ve got a capital gain, not loss), you’re SOL.

One other time, after another stock I had did a SPLIT, the data was wonky for the longest time. I kept waiting for them to correct it, but in the end, I realized I had to call in myself to tell them that the stock split and I actually have X number of shares, not Y. They corrected it for me on the spot.

What about you, have you had a positive or negative experience with any online brokerages? What has your experience been with Questrade? Is Questrade in the good books or bad books for you?
