About youngandthrifty’s Groupon Ban:
Hi, my name is youngandthrifty and I suffer from Daily Deal Site Addiction, otherwise known as DDSA. I am here today to share my story…
As everyone knows, these daily deal sites are seriously addictive. These daily deal sites send you updates, your friends sign up and tell you to sign up, you want to sign up, you DO sign up, you print out your coupon… and it sits there. It sits there and stares at you taunting you because you have already paid for it but you haven’t used it yet.
They’re cropping up everywhere because they use the power of impulse buying and peer pressure. You have a short time to complete the transaction. Your friends tell you to get it. You see that 543 other people got the same coupon too.
After much stress from accumulation of printed Groupon’s, TeamBuy, and Indulge Living coupons…
see my wondrous collection below:
- Art Gallery tickets
- a doggy day care coupon
- a restaurant coupon
- a facial Groupon (I have made an appt to use this already)
- a one month yoga pass
I officially decided to unsubscribe myself from Groupon’s daily deals…at least until this backlog of coupon accumulation decreases. I still have Teambuy or Indulge Living sending me daily deals, but somehow their deals don’t seem as tempting as Groupon’s. I will ban myself from signing up or purchasing more daily deal coupons until the above daily deal coupons are used…you heard it here!
Readers, do you find these daily deal sites addictive? Do you just automatically delete to avoid temptation of impulsive buying online like I do? Are you collecting these print-outs too, or are you better at using them than I am?
Here are some links for the weekend. Hope everyone has a great weekend!
PS there is an EXCITING announcement pertaining to a blogiversary (yes, it’s officially been a year since I’ve been blogging) on Monday- so please stay tuned!!
PPS If you haven’t signed up already for the RESP Book Giveaway, do it here because it ends on November 14!

“fantabulous” Lol. Great word.
I have a great story for you.
There was a groupon in Vancouver for $16 haircut and a great mens salon and I bought it even though I live in Victoria!
My wife and I enjoy going for day-trips to Vancouver but it is kind of nuts to get groupons for places where you don’t live.
I buy them on trips to california and Seattle.
They force you to experience different things and see stores you wouldn’t necessarily shop at.
@Steve Zussino- that IS a great story! I guess if you go to a good hairdresser then it can be worth it. They’re a good idea for the trips to california and seattle. I do like that they make you experience things you wouldn’t necessarily experience otherwise (like doggy day care for my dog).
I guess I’m fortunate that these daily deal sites avoid my city like the plague
@SavingMentor- lol yes! Saves you a lot of money
Who knows, maybe they’ll be there next!!
How ironic that you write about daily deal addiction the same day I post about my favorite daily deal sites! I stopped buying restaurant ones until we get rid of our backlog.
Thanks for the link love as well.
@Kay Lynn- lol really? Glad i’m not the only one with a back log
I’ll go check out your favourites, but I’m not going to sign up for anyone of them!
lol

Thanks for the mention. I haven’t use Groupon, but I’m starting to ignore the RedFlagDeals emails and other emails from similar sites.
When I want to buy something, I’ll go looking for the deal…
@Echo- yeah, that’s a good way to go about it. Avoid temptation just like me!
I still have not purchased anything through Groupon yet, but some deals sure do seem intriguing!
@Everyday Tips- Agree that some deals are very good indeed- very hard to resist temptation
Thanks for the mention Y&T.

I’ve been on Groupon for a couple of months now, and only bought one coupon, a few weeks ago, for a massage.
Then I realized I’d have to call and make an appointment for the massage, rather than just pop in for one when I felt like it… and suddenly it seems really hard to use the stupid thing.
Maybe my goal this week should be making that appointment for next weekend?
@Kellen- yeah.. for my doggy day care coupon, I ended up having to spend more money to get the vaccinations for my dog before he can even be in day care with other dogs!! Good luck with your goal- let me know if you end up using your groupon
Thanks for the mention!
Thanks for the birthday wishes!
I was so intrigued by your finding of so many good deals on Groupon, that I went and checked today’s deal for my city. It was a 55% saving on an annual family membership to a local cultural institution. I nearly bought into the deal, until I realized that my average annual expenditure on visits to this location are still less than the cost of the membership. These ‘deals’ can be deceptive!
