What are the common law rules in Ontario? (You're from Ottawa right?). I wonder if it's only BC that's swinging this way?? I agree with you completely on this. There was a Supreme Court case a while back where a Quebec couple split and one tried to argue that the same law should apply to them as a married couple who splits up. The Court said that it was important to maintain the difference between common law and married because it is a choice by the partners. I tend to agree. If you choose not to get married, the law should respect that choice. I am surprised BC is going this way. It does get nice and warm in August September though, just in time for Crush Season in Napa! That's the best.
