As much as I love All you Can Eat Japanese food, sometimes you just want some good ol’ sushi. Some HUGE pieces of good ol’ sushi.
No, Samurai Sushi House wasn’t created by Financial Samurai. Though it would be cool if he did create it
Samurai Sushi house is well known for their ridiculously large rolls (think sushi on STEROIDS). They are honestly about double the size of normal rolls. You definitely get your money’s worth here, and ordering three rolls will make TWO people full (instead of one person which is usually the case).
Samurai Sushi house is a small restaurant run by a Vietnamese family. Their “sister” sushi place is Ban Zai Sushi House in Richmond. I haven’t tried that place yet but will let you know when I do.
Samurai Sushi House is located across from Oakridge Centre (sort of in the heart of Vancouver, between downtown and Richmond). It is located on Cambie Street at the cross section on 41st Avenue. Very easily accessible by the new Canada Line (just hop off on Oakridge station).
Usually there is a line up. It’s a small place and there are only about 4-5 tables (that may be an overestimate). Most people order take out. They are lightning fast with their service. I suppose the only downside to eating at Samurai Sushi house is that some people may not like the lack of authenticity of the rolls. Obviously sushi rolls are not meant to look like they are on steroids. The chopped scallop roll also didn’t look like a “normal” chopped scallop roll you would get at another Japanese restaurant.
The California Rolls (invented in Vancouver #coolfactoid) are also very large and stuffed to the brim with imitation crab meat and very little avocado. I found their yam tempura roll to be very delicious.
So how cheap is cheap?
Very cheap.
The yam tempura roll was $2.75 and the chopped scallop roll was only $3.85. The california roll was $3.25.
See the picture I took below. I know I should have included another item in the picture so you get get its perspective. The plate is about the size of an outstretched hand (well, my outstretched hand anyway). So as you can see, each sushi piece is about half the diametre of a plate. The yam tempura sushi piece was about at least 3″ wide.
So total for (easily) two meals is $11!
Readers, have you tried Samurai Sushi House in Vancouver? Would you prefer quality or quantity when it comes to Sushi? Does size matter? (I personally prefer quality but that’s just me) ![]()

I prefer quality, but usually go for value these days. After eating sushi in Japan, I haven’t been able to enjoy expensive sushi in the US. Might as well go cheap because the quality is pretty similar. I’m going to pick up sushi on the way home tonight!
@retirebyforty- Sushi is expensive in the US! I remember having sushi in San Francisco (we stayed in Japantown when I went) and it was ridiculously expensive and I personally felt the quality wasn’t as good as Vancouver. I was too cheap to have sushi in Japan when I went, just stuck to ramen. Definitely on the “to do” list next time I ever visit Japan.
This post is maki me hungry. Quality is more important for me. But you can’t ignori a great deal like that either. Very cheap indeed. Nice find.
@Liquid Independence- I think I successfully made everyone hungry after this post
If there were sushi commission, the restauranteurs should pay me some lol.
I have been at Samurai Sushi at Oakridge and I have to say, it was the go-to place when I was in University because I can get full off a california roll. I am not a huge fan of that place because I prefer the Samurai on Davie Street.
BF and I use to order our dinner from Samurai on Davie Street in Downtown which we think has a better quality. Now that we’ve moved out of downtown, our go to (cheap) sushi place is Sushi Garden (Lougheed Hwy)
@Money Pincher- Hey girl! BTW CONGRATS ON THE ENGAGEMENT!!
I haven’t had the Samurai on Davie street, I don’t think they are associated though (hence the higher quality on Davie lol). The only place this Samurai sushi is associated with is another sushi place in Richmond. Is Sushi Garden the same place across from Metrotown? I’ve been there a few times but there’s always a big line up and it’s quite loud and dark inside.
Thanks
I am having trouble deciding what kind of engagement ring I want haha there’s way too many choices!
Yes, there are 2 sushi garden in Burnaby: Metrotown and Lougheed Hwy. I rarely eat in. I always buy take out because I don’t need to wait! There’s another sushi place in Burnaby North that is pretty good too (I recommend getting take out from there rather than eating in) – is Sushi Town
My all time favourite Sushi place is Kura near Metrotown.. Haha.. I guess u can tell that I am a huge sushi fan
@Money Pincher- Princess cut! Or the Halo! *HAHA I HAVEN”T BEEN RESEARCHING MYSELF I SWEAR!!* Are you going for a Tiffany’s?
(I think they’re overrated myself)
Round cut
couldn’t decide 4 prongs or 6 prongs… solitaire. Wanted a trilogy one, but I tried it on and it didn’t look good because my finger is too skinny
I m looking for something around 0.4 carat (i know.. hahah a 1.0 carat look too big on my finger!)… besides I want something small so I can wear it everyday.
I haven’t been to tiffany’s yet
it is my next to go!
If u want to have some fun with your girlfriends.. u guys should hit the jewellery store and try on some rings hehe.. it’s pretty fun but your eyes will go crazy because of all pretty sparkly rings
@Money Pincher- lol that sounds like a fun girls night.. but then we would probably look like gold diggers, no?
Don’t forget small is better! A small place in a convenient location where you can give up your car is an attractive choice.
@krantcents- Definitely agree
Convenience is key!
That’s an awesome deal! I have to admit, though, I can’t do raw fish. Did a scavenger hunt one time as a teen where eating sushi was a task and got it forced down my throat by a screaming peer. Oh, teambuilding…. :p
I am so jealous. The east coast is not known for excellent sushi…
@tinysarah- but you have lobster!!! That in itself is equal in my eyes. Mmmmm lobster.
Andddd now I want sushi. Waterloo seems to have an abundance of sushi restaurants these days, but none of them are “amazing”.
@Marissa- Sorry Marissa
Waterloo- I’m sure the sudden oncropping of sushi restaurants is due to the student population? I remember living on sushi when I was an undergrad student. I can see why it might not be amazing because waterloo isn’t by the ocean
Two meals for $11 sounds amazing. I know that the Vancouver area can be pretty expensive so this sounds like an even better deal.
@Ron- Yeah, they’re pretty filling alright! I think it was actually 3 meals for me. Not that I eat like a bird or anything, but it is just so filling with all that rice. Vancouver’s not too bad for food actually, it’s just the housing that is expensive. And gas.
Hey Y&T,
I will definitely have to check this one out
Where is it? Generally I prefer quality when it comes to Sushi, but I hate expensive Sushi. We have “Wild Sushi” just up the street here in Dunbar and 27th – it’s inexpensive and the Sushi is great! I love Sushi – it’s comfort food.
Does size matter?
LMAO – you shouldn’t be asking your readers those kinds of questions
PS
I’ll be getting back to the Y&T coding soon enough
Cheers
The Dividend Ninja
@The Dividend Ninja- Haha, does size matter? Haha I could go into further detail about the sushi… but I won’t.. this website is G rated lol. It’s across from Oakridge mall. I hate expensive sushi too! I haven’t heard of Wild Sushi- I’ve been to the place across from Shoppers though (that place has good sushi) on Dunbar.
Okay, now I’m officially hungry again, and I just ate! Doh!
This post has reminded me that I haven’t had sushi in about 3 months. This will change immediately!
@Roshawn- Haha I’m sorry! I end up having sushi cravings every few months too. It’s a shame I don’t eat it more since basically every third restaurant here in Vancouver is a sushi restaurant lol.
Hmmmm, is this restaurant meant for me?!
@Financial Samurai- Yeah, it was a secret shoutout to you
I have eaten there a few times, mostly from friends or family picking up a party tray. The food is inexpensive but you get what you pay for. It is not the best tasting sushi. Fish is sold at market value so when you find it cheaper than most other places then you have to wonder why. However, after trying a few times I know I wouldn’t spend my own money there. Sushi is not cheap but I’d rather save up and eat at a good place than there. I don’t feel bad for ragging on them, they are always busy so some folks obviously like it. But having worked at a seafood market all through high-school, which sold sushi grade fish, I think my tastes are more particular.
@BadCaleb- Yup, agree with you. I don’t think I would be going there again because my sushi tastes are slightly refined too- I’ve been spoiled living here (haha, and i include them in my cheap eats post). hey, it’s CHEAP eat but not a good eat. At least they don’t put carrots by themselves in the sushi. LOL that’s when you know the quality is terrible.
Yum! I wish I lived nearby.
@Melissa- I love sharing my food posts with everyone and making them hungry
Sushi is one of my favorite foods. I can eat it everyday. Two things I don’t like about it: first, good sushi is pricey (I don’t go to all you can eat sushi places just because I don’t believe in sushi mass production); and the second thing about sushi that buggs me is I am hungry after two hours of eating sushi.
Other than that, bring it on!
@Aloysa- I agree about the hungriness afterwards- some places offer brown rice right now which solves that problem. I don’t agree with sushi mass production too but my tastebuds don’t care
(and that’s terrible!).
